By participating in Minecraft activities in the classroom, students can learn about the world around them, and better understand the different types of rocks found in the world.
 
Playing Minecraft in a school setting is a great opportunity to teach students about geology and different types of rocks. &nbsp;
 
For example, I recommend creating and living in a virtual world with the main character of your choice, which I call the Geologist character, and then studying the rock formations that your Geologist character has found in your virtual world. This helps students learn the common and scientific names for different types of rocks, which helps them recognize different rocks in real life.
 
By building virtual mountains, caves and different types of rocks, students will begin to recognize the concept of rock layers. Once students recognize the differences between real rock layers, they will also begin to recognize them in the classroom and explain the differences between them and the virtual world they live in.
 
Another important lesson to learn about rocks is how they are formed. Geology textbooks often explain the process of rocks being formed by space and time, but students don’t get to see how the rocks formed in Minecraft. By studying the locations of the different types of rocks in Minecraft and then studying the different types of rocks in the classroom, students will get a better understanding of how to correctly identify different types of rocks, which will increase their interest and knowledge about the different types of rocks that can be found in the classroom and in the world.
